A little about the cats

The main material for the kitties is polymer clay. Polymer clay is not clay in the truest sense, but is a material made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), plasticizer, and pigment. It is sculpted and then baked in a conventional oven to a hard, durable finish. It is available in many colors and can be used in an amazing variety of ways to create a wide array of products.

This cat is made from a mix of colors that have been swirled and blended together. The collar is a thinly-sliced ribbon of black clay embellished with a Swarovski Crystal rhinestone. The whiskers are a flexible beading material pushed into the raw clay and baked in. The eyes are made from a "cane" of polymer clay. A cane is a long rod of different color clays that are pressed and blended together to create a design which runs the length of the rod. Slices can be cut off each end and used in other creations.

This next kitty has glass beads for eyes:

In addition to the figurines, I've turned the cats into beads, earrings, pins, magnets, and the most functional item so far, eyeglass holders.

If you're like me and have trouble keeping track of your glasses, these little guys can come in very handy!

These pins were made by mixing colors and pressing the clay into a cat-shaped candy mold.

I added the facial features individually. The eyes and collar embellishments are either glass beads, rhinestones, or Swarovski Crystals. It varies from cat to cat.

Lest you think I'm a one-trick pony and make only cat-themed items, here are a few examples of non-cat-related items I've done:

There's even a D-O-G!

See...NOT just a Crazy Cat Lady!

Upcoming show

How time flies! I've barely gotten this blog off the ground (perhaps it's only half-way off at this point!) and it's time for another show. This one is at the Meridian Township pavilion again this Sunday, September 28. The time is 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. C'mon out and see what's new. Also, check out the online photo album, as I posted some new creations this week that I will have at the show.

A little about Clawdia's Creations

I've dabbled in a variety of crafts for years, mainly beading, scrapbooking and fabric painting. I was curious about polymer clay, but didn't get started working with it until this year. I spent most of 2007 taking care of my grandmother, getting her moved into assisted living and then selling her home. Once that was done I needed some "me" time...and I decided it was time to explore clay. It's an amazing medium with so many applications and techniques I'll be exploring and learning for a lo-o-o-ng time! My love of cats quickly led me to start producing feline-inspired creations...and since there are a lot of cat people, maybe some of them will enjoy my creations as well! Hopefully I'm right and Clawdia's Creations will be a success. For now it will remain a small venture, while I work my two "real" jobs and continue to learn new techniques. Mostly I'll concentrate on local craft shows and sales, and move into online selling as time permits. In the meantime, if you see something you like on here, feel free to e-mail me. I welcome input and requests!
